The Paleo Superfood For Blood Sugar Control

When you have diabetes, managing blood sugar is key. Unaddressed, high blood sugar can lead to infections, digestive problems, damage to vision, nerves, organs and more. Keeping blood sugar in check is serious business.

Most diabetics know they have to manage their carbs, their insulin, drink enough water and exercise. Fewer know that one superfood is proven to level out blood glucose.

Yes, we’re talking about Moringa oleifera.

Here are the findings from four important studies on Moringa for blood glucose:

  1. A study published in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences found that Moringa leaf extract inhibits absorption of sucrose in the intestine, with positive effects on blood glucose.
  2. Another study found Moringa extract to be only slightly less effective than Glipizide, a pharmaceutical blood-glucose lowering drug. These results were observed in rats given large doses of pure glucose.
  3. A 2013 study found that Moringa leaf extract demonstrated potency comparable to or greater than Glibenclamide, an antidiabetic drug, when administered to diabetic rats.
  4. A study in the International Journal of Health and Nutrition found that post-meal blood glucose was reduced in diabetic patients given Moringa leaf powder.

As we all know, diabetes is on the rise in a big way, and we have the standard North American diet to thank.

We’re not actually Paleo advocates, but we are fans of unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods that heal. It just happens that many of these are ‘traditional’ foods, like Moringa: pre-modern, wild, non-GMO, and easy to grow organically. These are the foods we were designed to eat. These are the foods we ate when diabetes was rare.

There’s just no comparison between Moringa and modern corn or wheat (i.e. what’s on our plates). Moringa leaves are packed with nutrients and low in calories. Industrial wheat and corn, pretty much the opposite.

In many ways, Moringa works like a perfectly engineered package of nutrients. We don’t know which of Moringa’s vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats or phytochemicals work to lower blood sugar - but the combination found in Moringa leaves does work.

And it’s easy to get the benefits of Moringa. You can add Moringa leaf powder to water or to a (low-glycemic) smoothie. Some people find taking Moringa leaf powder in capsule form is the ultimate convenience.
