Since writing our book on Moringa oleifera, The More of Moringa, exciting new studies have emerged.
Today, I’ll share findings from a study that examined Moringa for breast and colorectal cancers - two of the most deadly cancers in Canada.
The study investigated the anti-cancer effect of Moringa oleifera leaf, bark and seed extracts. It looked specifically at the effects of Moringa on colorectal and breast cancer cells.
The results? Researchers found that the extracts of leaves and bark showed remarkable anti-cancer properties while surprisingly, seed extracts exhibited far fewer of these properties.
When abnormal - and potentially cancerous - cells develop, our healthy bodies routinely dispose of these defects through a process called ‘aptosis’, the natural, or programmed death of abnormal cells. When cancer strikes, aptosis is blocked.
In this study, researchers found “a remarkable increase in the number of apoptotic cells” when treated with the leaf and bark extract.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but what you want to see in a cancer study is low cell survival, because when researchers talk about ‘cell survival’ in cancer studies, they’re referring to cancer cell survival under treatment. Ideally, the treatment should wipe out the cancerous cells.
The good news out of this study is that ‘cell survival was significantly low in both cells lines when treated with leaves and bark extracts.” In short, Moringa leaf and bark extract eradicated most of the breast and colorectal cancer cells.
Also promising, researchers found that the spread and progress of cancer was significantly reduced upon treatment with moringa leaves and bark.
Why were the Moringa extracts so effective against the cancer cells?
“Analyses of these extracts revealed numerous known anti-cancer compounds, namely eugenol, isopropyl isothiocynate, D-allose, and hexadeconoic acid ethyl ester, all of which possess long chain hydrocarbons, sugar moiety and an aromatic ring. This suggests that the anti-cancer properties of Moringa oleifera could be attributed to the bioactive compounds present in the extracts from this plant.”
The researchers concluded that the leaves and bark of Moringa could be used to develop pharmaceutical treatments for breast and colorectal cancers.
We say, why wait? Get your prevention on with a daily dose of Moringa leaf. Ours is certified organic, raw and sourced from what may be the best Moringa farm in the world.
